The LearningWell Coalition is proud to announce the release of a new white paper by founding chair Rick Miller, titled More Reasons to Do the Right Thing: Why Character Belongs at the Center of Higher Education’s Mission. The paper is now available on the LearningWell Coalition website.
The white paper presents a research-driven argument for integrating character education into the core of the college experience. Drawing from decades of scholarship and leadership in higher education, Miller makes the case that qualities such as gratitude, integrity, humility, and generosity are not only essential to individual flourishing but also to the health of society.
“At a time when the public is rightly questioning the value of college, we need to return to the foundational purpose of higher education,” Miller writes. “Helping students develop character is not just the right thing to do—it is one of the most powerful ways to promote lifelong wellbeing.”
The white paper is intended for higher education leaders, policymakers, faculty, and funders who are seeking to understand how colleges and universities can better equip students to thrive long after graduation.
