The LearningWell Coalition is pleased to announce that Tufts University has joined its growing network of colleges and universities committed to advancing evidence-based, learner-centered education that promotes flourishing in life, career, and society. Tufts is joining the Coalition through its innovative Ballou Impact Scholars Program, which closely aligns with the Coalition’s mission of supporting holistic student success and well-being.

The Ballou Impact Scholars Program is a pilot initiative aimed at enhancing student success by offering comprehensive support, including academic empowerment, mentorship, mental health services, and financial literacy resources. Initially designed to support first-generation students, those from low-income backgrounds, and individuals from under-resourced school communities, the program serves as a model for shaping a more inclusive and holistic student experience across Tufts University. By integrating with existing initiatives, the program provides a seamless, personalized learning environment and fosters a strong sense of community by connecting students with faculty, peers, staff, and alumni. The ultimate goal is to prepare students for meaningful careers that have a positive global and civic impact, increasing retention and graduation rates among underrepresented students and cultivating resilient leaders who will make a positive impact on society.

Keith Buffinton, Executive Director of the LearningWell Coalition, expressed excitement about Tufts’ membership: “We are thrilled to welcome Tufts University to the LearningWell Coalition. The Ballou Impact Scholars Program is an excellent example of how higher education institutions can create meaningful, supportive environments that empower students to thrive both academically and personally. We look forward to collaborating with Tufts to expand their impact on student success and share best practices with our broader network of institutions.”

Tufts University President Sunil Kumar also emphasized the alignment between Tufts’ strategic goals and the Coalition’s mission: “A core part of my priorities as president is to partner with the undergraduate Deans and focus on improving and enhancing undergraduate student access, experience, and outcomes. This effort will be supported institutionally through financial resources as well as administrative, process, and technological improvements. I believe Tufts’ work focused on student success, starting with a pilot program to be launched during the next academic year, aligns perfectly with the goals of the LearningWell Coalition.”

The holistic approach of the Ballou Impact Scholars Program builds lasting relationships with faculty, staff, alumni, and peers while equipping students with the skills necessary to make a meaningful impact in the world. As Tufts continues to enhance student success and foster engagement, the university will benefit from the LearningWell Coalition’s resources and its network of like-minded institutions dedicated to transformative learning experiences.
