The Purpose Project at Roanoke College is a campus-wide initiative to weave purpose exploration into every dimension of student life, from courses and advising to co-curricular programming and career services. At its center is Roanoke’s Purpose Model, a simple but powerful framework built around four interlocking elements: Skills (what makes you, you), Love (what motivates and excites you), Needs (how you contribute to your communities), and Value (what personal and professional rewards matter to you). By prompting students to reflect on these elements across their four years, the model traces a student’s development from early self-awareness to a mature, integrated sense of purpose.

What makes the approach distinctive is its intentional breadth. Rather than housing purpose work in a single office or program, Roanoke designed the model so that every member of the campus community can participate: faculty connecting coursework to student skills, advisors asking about passions and interests, and staff helping students see the meaning in their work. The shared language and framework give the entire institution a common way to contribute to student flourishing in both small and large ways.
