The LearningWell Coalition is proud to welcome Al Akhawayn University (AUI) in Ifrane, Morocco, as its newest member and first international institution to join the Coalition’s growing network. AUI’s membership marks an important milestone in the Coalition’s mission to promote transformational, learner-centered education that fosters student wellbeing and lifelong purpose.
AUI joins through its Paths to Purpose initiative, a comprehensive, campus-wide effort that embeds opportunities for students to explore and reflect on their sense of purpose throughout the undergraduate experience. The initiative reflects AUI’s deep belief that helping students connect with a sense of meaning—both during college and beyond—is a critical marker of human development and long-term wellbeing.
“My administration has consistently focused attention on developing a 360° strategy for student wellbeing on campus,” said AUI President Dr. Amine Bensaid. “We are equally committed to the lifelong wellbeing of our students in terms of both their employability and their long-term personal fulfillment and happiness.”
AUI’s Paths to Purpose initiative takes a developmental approach, offering multiple, intentional touchpoints across students’ four years. These include purpose-focused advising; the integration of “Design Your Life” principles into the First Year Experience; civic engagement paired with structured reflection; and dedicated purpose modules embedded in AUI’s e-portfolio system and senior exit interviews. Interdisciplinary courses, honors seminars, and capstone projects also provide opportunities for students to grapple with ethical questions, life goals, and broader societal impact.
To support this work, AUI is implementing a range of assessment tools to evaluate student progress and long-term outcomes. The initiative has already drawn attention from international partners, including the Human Flourishing Program at Harvard University.
“We are honored to welcome Al Akhawayn University into the LearningWell Coalition,” said Keith Buffinton, Executive Director. “Their commitment to student flourishing—backed by a holistic, values-driven educational approach and rigorous assessment—exemplifies the kind of innovation and purpose-driven education the Coalition seeks to champion.”
The addition of AUI strengthens the Coalition’s commitment to expanding global conversations on student flourishing and provides an opportunity for cross-cultural learning around how best to support students in a rapidly changing world.
