UF Quest is an ambitious program at the University of Florida that reimagines the undergraduate general education experience. Rather than filling distribution requirements with disconnected courses, UF Quest invites students to grapple with the difficult, consequential questions they will face as thoughtful adults navigating a complex world — questions about the human condition, the natural and social sciences, and the meaning of their own education. All Quest courses emphasize close reading, critical thinking, and effective communication, with experiential learning and self-reflection built in throughout.

The program unfolds in four parts. Quest 1 courses are interdisciplinary and humanities-centered, asking foundational questions: What makes life worth living? What makes a society fair? How do we manage conflict? Quest 2 courses shift from “what does it mean” to “what can we do,” centering real-world issues that cut across the biological, physical, social, and behavioral sciences. Quest 3 is a semester-long practical experience in one of five areas: internship, undergraduate research, global engagement, community service, or creative endeavor — a chance for students to fully engage with the world through their studies. Quest 4, currently in development, will offer an optional synthesis of the full Quest experience within a student’s discipline. To date, more than 200 Quest 1 and 2 courses have been created, and over 10,000 students take them each year.
