The Wendt Center for Character Education at the University of Dubuque has been a defining influence on campus culture for more than two decades, advancing UD’s mission to cultivate character and purpose in students, faculty, and staff. Grounded in the university’s Presbyterian heritage and organized around four pursuits — Seeking Knowledge and Insight, Supporting Wellbeing, Strengthening Community, and Serving Others — the Center integrates intellectual growth, emotional depth, and purposeful action to prepare the campus community to live with integrity and contribute to the common good.

Two new initiatives are extending this work to every corner of campus. Pathways to Purpose will bring character development opportunities to all students, not just those in the flagship Wendt Character Scholars program, weaving character, wellbeing, and identity into daily student life through partnerships with Student Life, Residence Life, Athletics, Career Services, Fine and Performing Arts, and the broader Dubuque community. The Character Learning Outcome Faculty Development Initiative, launching with pilot departments in Summer 2026, will help faculty across disciplines develop and assess character learning outcomes in their curricula, ensuring that the values and virtues students need for life beyond UD are embedded in the classroom, not treated as an afterthought.
