The Illinois Alternative is the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s ambitious initiative to redesign undergraduate education from the ground up — built around the conviction that higher education must do more than transmit knowledge, and that every student deserves an experience that helps them discover who they are, develop their unique gifts, and deploy them in service of something larger than themselves.

The initiative is structured around three developmental phases: Discover, Develop, and Deploy. Rather than treating identity exploration, purpose, and community as supplemental to the academic experience, the Illinois Alternative integrates them into the core. The framework asks students to know themselves — their interests, values, and passions — alongside the fundamentals of their chosen field; to do meaningful work that applies knowledge to real-world challenges; and to become people who lead with empathy, resilience, and a clear sense of their own agency. It is a redesign not just of curriculum, but of what it means to earn a degree.

The initiative is currently in active design, with a diverse team of faculty and staff building out the model through 2026. Pilots with a cohort of students are planned for 2027, with an assessment framework developed in tandem — aligned with the LearningWell Coalition’s guidelines and the Gallup-Purdue “Big Six” experiences. The ultimate goal is a model scalable to tens of thousands of students across one of the nation’s largest public research universities.
